Collecta : Live Search Engine

20 06 2009

Host Intruder Copyright

//Yep …  Collecta is the latest entrant in the search wars. Its a realtime search engine, means it scans the Internet, searching through news stories, status updates, blog posts, Facebook micro-blogging sites such as Twitter, blogs comments and other sources. Collecta was built based on the open messaging standard XMPP.

Its not like the other search engines, use Collecta only to search for “hot-topic” (what is happening right now) like iPhone, Ubuntu, Windows 7, etc. and the results are impressive. I spent some time playing with the sample pages and wow,  the posted search results were really up-to-date(less than a minute). Results came from Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, blogs and everywhere else.

Host Intruder Copyright

“The web is alive with real-time information. So why search a stale archive? Collecta monitors the update streams of news sites, popular blogs and social media, and Flickr, so we can show you results as they happen.” says on Collecta website in a note.

Another insteresting feature is that you can leave multiple searches running simultaneously to receive a continuous stream of results. I think its one of the best real time search engine on the web for the time being. Check it out.

//Yeahhh, Facebook will soon(tomorrow morning) allow its users to choose a personalise web address for their profile page. Now we will have our real names to share and connect with friends. A nice move by Facebook. This way your friends will have an easy-to-remember way to find you. Facebook users will have the option to claim variation of their personalise URL on a first-come, first-served basis. Tomorrow you will have to be very fast to be the first one to choose the name you want. Here’s the countdown before the launch.

Here is a request form for businesses that want to make sure their trademarks are reserved. This form can be used to prevent your trademarks from being registered as usernames.

Example

Instead of “http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=541320719” (littered with numbers and random letters). You will have something like “http://www.facebook.com/username” which is easier to remember.

Wolfram Alpha Begins

28 04 2009

//…. still busy with assignments, ok let’s go for a quick post. What is Wolfram Alpha? Have you heard about it, hmm … its a movie? a new operating system? a robot? a search engine? Guess !!

Well Wolfram Alpha is a new way to get answers from the web, they called it the “computational knowlegde engine”. Wolfram Alpha engine will be able to process questions people ask in natural language like “What percentage of the human body is water?”.  Instead of returning links to pages that may contain the answer to your questions, this search engine will respond with the actual answer.

Don’t get confused, its not like Google search engine. Google is not intelligent, the following search results make Google to appear intelligent but its not the case. These values have been fetched from a database.

                    1. One dollar in mauritian rupees

                    2. Atomic mass of plutonim

                   3.  Circumference of the earth

I think Wolfram will have the ability to reason based on information about the subject and to understand natural language. In a blog post Stephen Wolfram said:

“Getting computers to deal with natural language has turned out to be incredibly difficult … Wolfram Alpha …With one simple input field that gives access to a huge system, with trillions of pieces of curated data and millions of lines of algorithms”.

Will Wolfram Alpha be a sucess ? Lets wait and see …

How they are different from Google?

They are not trying to index the web, instead they are trying to compute data(knowledge) of the web using natural language algorithms. Wolfram computes answers, it doesn’t look them up in a database. It allows someone to ask scientific(technology, music, weather and more) questions and it compute the answers.

Wolfram Alpha is built on top of 5 million lines of Mathematica code running on top of about 10,000 CPUs.

Who is behind this computational data engine?

Stephen Wolfram, a British physicist, mathematician and businessman known for his work in theoretical particle physics, cosmology, cellular automata, complexity theory, and computer algebra. ~ From Wikipedia

He built that engine based on his previous research and works Mathematica and A New Kind of Science

Visit WolframAlpha … Launching May 2009 … I’m excited to test this new engine. If(it’s a really big IF) this really works, its going to be a big thing.

//Hooray … Hotmail POP3 is available (free at last) to all users. Now I no longer have to suffer their horrible webmail service and their ugly interface with loads of advertising. Yeah, I can finally pull out Hotmail into my Gmail account. I bet a lot of you are doing the same thing too!! For those of you (like me) that used their Hotmail account as a garbage collection(spam, chain mail, random registration, etc.), you can set up a few filters and a few labels to manage all the mail that comes from Hotmail. 😀

Tip
: You can use TemporaryInbox as a temporary mail for registration purposes. Btw, don’t forget that you could also access Hotmail on your web-enabled mobile phone from mobile.live.com.

Hotmail POP3 Settings:

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Note: You will need the information above to set up Hotmail in email program on your PC or mobile device.

Guide: How to access Hotmail from within Gmail?

Step 1:

Open your Gmail account > Settings > Accounts > Choose “Add a mail account you own“.

What is POP3?

Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) is an Internet standard protocol used by local e-mail clients to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connectionWhat is POP3? It is a protocol that allows almost any e-mail software program that you’ve installed on your mobile phone or PC(if supported by your device and e-mail program) to get messages from your e-mail inbox on the web and deliver them in the designated program. ~ From Wikipedia

Triple Torrent Download Speed

2 03 2009
Host Intruder Copyright
// Yep…with price reductions and increased speed on broadband and Orange My.T in Mauritius, its  time to accelerate your download speed. This is a step by step guide on how to configure uTorrent to triple your download speed. I recommend uTorrent(the number one choice) as BitTorrent client. If you are new to torrent world then you should first check this tutorial for port forwarding.

Note
: I assume that you have done the port forwarding stuff. If not, here is a step by step tutorial(made by myself) for forwarding a port in the router(myT livebox). You can still go by without port forwarding, but speeds will not be optimal.

Disclaimer: Proceed at your own risk! I will not be held responsible if this document causes your computer to explode or burst into flames. In real serious terms, if any corruption of data, hardware damage or any other kind of damage/losses/etc. arises from the use of this tutorial, I will not be responsible for it.

Step 1: Increase the number of Max Half Open TCP connections

Let’s starts, Windows XP limits the number of connections a Bittorrent client can attempt to establish simultaneously at any given time. The default limit in Windows XP is 10, its a barrier against virus multiplication(to slow the propogation of worms) but its also drop torrent speeds considerably, as torrent needs a large number of simultaneous connnections.

What is Half Open TCP Connection?

A half-open connection is when your computer has requested a connection to a remote computer, but has not received an acknowledgment back. If the remote computer is overloaded, it can take some time for it to acknowledge the request, during which time your local connection sits there, half open. Eventually it will time out.

To change this limit:

  • First you have to download that patch.

For Winblows XP Service Pack 2: Download Patch Here

For Winblows XP Service Pack 3: Download Patch Here

  • After that you need to disable your Internet connection/Unplug your Internet cable and restart your computer.
  • Then run the patch to set the connection number, set it to 200.  (Some said that 500 to 600 is better).

Host Intruder Copyright

  • Click ‘Apply’ and Restart the computer again.

Note: This patch modifies the TCPIP.sys file in Windows to allow a higher number of TCP connections.

Step 2: Set the number of TCP connection in uTorrent

  • Open uTorrent, go to Options > Preferences > Advanced.
  • In the right hand side pane, browse for “net.max_halfopen” and set to “190”, as shown in the picture below.
  • Click “Set” and finally “Apply”.

Note: The number of “net.max_halfopen” is set lower than the value set in TCPIP.sys.

Host Intruder Copyright

After these two steps, you should notice a considerable increase in speed(of course if you are downloading a file with with a good number of seeders).

Step 3: Changing the Protocol Encryption in uTorrent

When enabling protocol encryption, ISPs find it difficult if not impossible to detect that the traffic is coming from BitTorrent. I’ve enabled it but I don’t know if this setting has contributed to the increase in speed. Yep, logically you should get better speeds with encryption disabled.

  • Open uTorrent, go to Options > Preferences > BitTorrent.
  • Select “Enabled” from the list and click “Apply”.

Host Intruder Copyright

Step 4: Don’t forget to change the “Connection Type”

  • Open uTorrent, go to  Options > Speed Guide.
  • In the “Connection Type” zone.
  • Set it to xx/512k (depending on your broadband connection).

Host Intruder Copyright

Conclusion

After running through each of the above steps, you should get a nice juicy download speeds. If you don’t see the green icon(as shown in the picture below), then something is wrong with “Port Forwarding”, check out the steps again in the tutorial to try solve this problem.

Dark Side of Facebook Connect

5 12 2008

// Yeah, Facebook has just released Facebook Connect, the next evolution of facebook platform. But what is Facebook Connect? Facebook Connect is a new service that allows users to login other websites like CitySearch, CNN The Forum, TechCrunch and much more by using their Facebook ID’s and users can even share their activities from these third-party sites with their Facebook friends.

Google have a similar service named Friend Connect, launched earlier. Friend Connect does the same thing as Facebook Connect, but only for users of social networks Orkut and Plaxo.

The Dark Side

I am a bit afraid of using this service. Why? The act of leaving a comment here and there (blogs and other websites) is telling the “Facebook  brain” which topics you like. In other words, you just told the system a little bit about yourself. Now imagine with Facebook Connect, such information coming from dozens of Facebook Connect partners websites.

Each service adds a few more data about you inside the “Facebook brain” and Facebook will know all activities inside the Facebook ecosystem. Facebook can use all these information to build a fairly accurate image of who you are, what you like and what might interest you. These informations can be used to target yourself with specific advertisements based on your interests. Just hope that Facebook will respect our privacy. Anyway, I like Facebook a lot.

Forget about these scary things now, I will just give an overview of how it works:

Overview

1. Look for the icon below on any Facebook Connect partners websites:

2. Sign in using your Facebook user ID and password.

During login the user can authenticate and connect their account in a trusted environment. The user will have total control of the permissions granted.

3. After login, you can engage in your activities at the third party website. For example add comments, post reviews and among others.

4. Dynamic Privacy, users can control who can see what pieces of their information – the same rules that they set on Facebook can be applied through all your Facebook Connect partners websites using  Facebook dynamic privacy controls.

5. With Facebook Connect, users can bring their real identity information with them wherever they go on the Web, including: basic profile information, profile picture, name, friends, photos, events, groups, and more.

6. Finally share all your activites,  actions and information with your friends on Facebook.

What is Facebook ?

Facebook is a social networking website launched on February 4, 2004. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profile to notify friends about themselves.

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook while he was a student at Harvard University. Website membership was initially limited to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Ivy League. It later expanded further to include any university student, then high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over. The website currently has more than 120 million active users worldwide.
