Wolfram Alpha Begins

28 04 2009

//…. still busy with assignments, ok let’s go for a quick post. What is Wolfram Alpha? Have you heard about it, hmm … its a movie? a new operating system? a robot? a search engine? Guess !!

Well Wolfram Alpha is a new way to get answers from the web, they called it the “computational knowlegde engine”. Wolfram Alpha engine will be able to process questions people ask in natural language like “What percentage of the human body is water?”.  Instead of returning links to pages that may contain the answer to your questions, this search engine will respond with the actual answer.

Don’t get confused, its not like Google search engine. Google is not intelligent, the following search results make Google to appear intelligent but its not the case. These values have been fetched from a database.

                    1. One dollar in mauritian rupees

                    2. Atomic mass of plutonim

                   3.  Circumference of the earth

I think Wolfram will have the ability to reason based on information about the subject and to understand natural language. In a blog post Stephen Wolfram said:

“Getting computers to deal with natural language has turned out to be incredibly difficult … Wolfram Alpha …With one simple input field that gives access to a huge system, with trillions of pieces of curated data and millions of lines of algorithms”.

Will Wolfram Alpha be a sucess ? Lets wait and see …

How they are different from Google?

They are not trying to index the web, instead they are trying to compute data(knowledge) of the web using natural language algorithms. Wolfram computes answers, it doesn’t look them up in a database. It allows someone to ask scientific(technology, music, weather and more) questions and it compute the answers.

Wolfram Alpha is built on top of 5 million lines of Mathematica code running on top of about 10,000 CPUs.

Who is behind this computational data engine?

Stephen Wolfram, a British physicist, mathematician and businessman known for his work in theoretical particle physics, cosmology, cellular automata, complexity theory, and computer algebra. ~ From Wikipedia

He built that engine based on his previous research and works Mathematica and A New Kind of Science

Visit WolframAlpha … Launching May 2009 … I’m excited to test this new engine. If(it’s a really big IF) this really works, its going to be a big thing.

//Hooray … Hotmail POP3 is available (free at last) to all users. Now I no longer have to suffer their horrible webmail service and their ugly interface with loads of advertising. Yeah, I can finally pull out Hotmail into my Gmail account. I bet a lot of you are doing the same thing too!! For those of you (like me) that used their Hotmail account as a garbage collection(spam, chain mail, random registration, etc.), you can set up a few filters and a few labels to manage all the mail that comes from Hotmail. 😀

What is POP3?

Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) is an Internet standard protocol used by local e-mail clients to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connectionWhat is POP3? It is a protocol that allows almost any e-mail software program that you’ve installed on your mobile phone or PC(if supported by your device and e-mail program) to get messages from your e-mail inbox on the web and deliver them in the designated program. ~ From Wikipedia

Cupidon, petit con en Pampers

14 02 2009

Google Search Went Down

31 01 2009

//Wooooaa, what’s happening on the world wide web? Its 19:37 (GMT+4), a friend of mine just phoned me as he was having some problems with his new set of speakers. As usual, the easiest way to find a solution for him, was to google the problem. Guess what? Anything I searched on Google, the warning message “This Site May Harm Your Computer” appears underneath each of the results.

Host Intruder Copyright ©

If you click the title of the result, you’ll be shown the following warning:

Host Intruder Copyright ©

At first I thought that the problem was on my computer (maybe a virus or spyware), I logged onto my second PC, googled again, same problem. Even if I search for the word “Google”, I got the same message. Damn, Google went down, Google’s Search was completely unusable.

There are many possible explanations: Either Google went down or every server on the Internet becoming infected (lol… can’t be). Maybe Google servers were hacked (lol… why not) but one thing is sure, the problem is from Google side. Seems to be a major Google bug. Hope everything will be solved soon.

Update Saturday 31 January @ 20:11 (GMT+4):

Just Google It! …Google Seems to be coming back to normal.  What happened to cause these false warnings? I will answer to it as soon as Google gives an explantion :).

Update Saturday 01 February @ 7:30 (GMT+4):

It was simply an error, human error. Here is the official explanation from Google (Marissa Mayer).

Skype For Your Mobile Phone

9 01 2009

Host Intruder Copyright ©

// Yeeps, Skype people won’t stop to surprise us. They just launched Skype Lite (still in beta) for mobiles phones (Java-enabled phones) and for Android-powered devices. Now most Sony Ericsson, Nokia, LG and Motorola users can install this pretty nice application on their mobiles phones and “Yuppie”; Skype chat and Skype-to-Skype calls on mobile.

Skype Lite has the following capabilities:

  • Make Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world.
  • Send/receive instant messages to/from individuals or groups.
  • Make Skype calls at low rates to people on landline or mobile phones.
  • Receive calls to your online personal phone number on Skype.
  • See when your Skype contacts are online/available to chat.

This version of Skype needs a mobile internet connection and uses local air time in order to sign in, update your contact list, send/receive calls or messages and update your presence on Skype. To be able to use this version of Skype, you will need both a calling plan and a data plan. You can even receive your Skype calls directly on your mobile phones. Call your Skype friends in Mauritius with local call rates.

I have just installed Skype Lite on my mobile phone (Sony Ericsson Rocks!), it has a nice user interface, easy navigation and fast response on Cellplus(or Orange) network. During testing, none of my Mauritian Skype friends were online; so no test calls for the time being.

Click here to go to the download page.

Give it a try, Skype rocks!! Stay tuned for more on this as it develops.

Extra Second Added To Year 2008

28 12 2008

// Woooow, the Earth is slowing down, throwing the timescales of the World Atomic Clock out of sync. Don’t worry, the world’s official timekeepers are here to keep the atomic clocks accurate by adding an extra second to the last day of 2008. This extra second is also known as a “leap second”.

The extra second will be added on to 31 December after 23:59:59 and before 00:00:00 PM UTC(Universal Coordinated Time). It will be the 86,401st second of the year. This is an important procedure because mechanisms such as the Internet-based Network Time Protocol and the satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) depend on the accurate time kept by atomic clocks.

Scientific Explanation
After some research here and there on the Web, I found that the Earth takes slightly longer(usually .0002 seconds) than 24 hours to make one complete rotation. After about 500 days, the accumulated difference between astronomical time and atomic time can be about a second.
In order to synchronize the atomic clocks with the Earth’s observed rotation, the atomic clocks are occasionally instructed to add the leap second.

Why the Earth’s rotation is slowing down?
The space surrounding the planet is far from empty, the Earth loses its kinetic energy due to all forms of friction acting on it; tides, galactic space dust, solar wind, space weather, geomagnetic storms and among others, causing it to slow down gradually. And also transfer of rotational energy  from the Earth to the moon’s orbit through tides contribute to this slow down. The moon is very slowly increasing its orbital radius.

Effect
Ooohh, we will have to wait a little longer(1 second) on this New Year’s Eve before hearing the firecrackers. The extra second plus the extra day of February 29 will make 2008 the longest year since 1992. For those having an atomic clock at home, don’t forget to add the extra second 23:59:60, lol.

Anyway, on December 31 at “23:59:60“, will be the time to  celebrate a new beginning, a time to wish all our friends and loved ones a happy new year!! Wish you all a Very Happy New Year 2009 & Enjoy Youself.
